Finding your way in STS

Wiebe Bijker, a leading figure in STS, retired in 2017, so this could certainly be seen as old news. But I only recently discovered that there are videos of the whole event that can be found online.

In 2017, Wiebe Bijker retired from Maastricht University, after a long and distinguished career. This could not go unmarked. Wiebe gave a farewell lecture, called “Constructing Worlds: Reflections on Science, Technology and Democracy (and a Plea for Bold Modesty)”, published in Engaging Science, Technology, and Society.

His Maastricht colleagues organized a symposium with international speakers. All material can be found here. The first performance of ‘Music for four instruments and a bicycle’ was played by Wiebe’s daughters.

We put together a book, called Wegwijs in STS/Knowing your way in STS. It includes contributions in both Dutch and English, prepared by past and present colleagues and students of Wiebe. I had the enormous privilege of presenting this to Wiebe during the ceremony.

During the early 2021 corona lockdown, I had the unexpected joy of discovering the video. Watching smiling people, sitting close together was very emotional.
